There is #NoWrongPath!

As part of the DYW #NoWrongPath campaign, we’re excited to share stories from some members of the Wills Bros team. Their diverse career journeys showcase the many different paths that can lead to success. Our team members prove there’s no single route to a successful and fulfilling career, there can be lots of twists and turns along the way!

Read some fasctnating stories from our people below.

Angela Newlands, Community Liaison Manager

When I was younger, I had dreams of studying languages and becoming an interpreter, but I ended up on a different journey.  At 16  I left school to earn money and become independent. I first stepped into the world of work as an Office Junior, not really having any future career plans. With only four O Grades and two Highers, I thought that was the end of my education. A few years later I got married, started a family and worked part-time in the semiconductor industry, never imagining the twists my journey would take.

As my children grew, I felt the itch to learn and grow so I enrolled in a computing degree course and rediscovered a passion I had always had in computer programming. When I finished my degree, I fell into the world of Civil Engineering —a field I’d always admired from afar but never considered as a career. Today, I’m proud to say that I work full-time in a job I love, with @willsbrosgroup contributing to projects that shape our world, and working with different communities, helping to make a real difference.

My journey wasn’t a straight line, and it certainly wasn’t what I initially planned but every experience along the way, every detour, brought me to where I am today. It took time, but I believe I ended up exactly where I was meant to be. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there’s no wrong path. Every twist and turn can lead to something incredible, even if it’s not what you originally envisioned. If you are feeling unsure about your future or struggling with unexpected changes, remember: your path can change, and that’s okay. Enjoy the journey, as it might just take you to the place you’re meant to be.

Johanne Moohan, Learning&Development Manager

I worked in Burger King. I lived between Linwood and Bridge of Weir and was always going between mum and dads house, coming from a big family no-one ever mentioned what happened after school, it was just assumed I would work or have children. I left school with 6 Highers and did ok with results, but I was not a natural at school. I was awkward and found studying hard. I preferred to talk through my thoughts rather than write them down, I didn’t align with the standard academic route. I could talk and present well, and I had good relationships with people. I was the first person in my family to go to university, I completed a BA in Law and Business Admin Management and achieved my honours degree. It’s a miracle really because I was working two jobs more than 50-hour weeks and studying.

I have spent the last 20 years working with and learning about people. I have a husband and two boys who drive me nuts most days.

I’ve worked in Human Resources, Learning and Development and Training. I worked for a large UK charity managing all their learning needs, I’ve spent the last 10 years working in Engineering with people much smarter than me! Every day is a school day. I have the pleasure of developing our people, I get to support, coach, mentor and develop across all levels in the business. I’ve learned what works for me and how I learn. I recently completed my Master of Science in Human Resource Management from the University of West Scotland and I am the Learning & Development Manager in Wills Bros. There really is no wrong path, try to find what you love and do it.

What I Would Tell my Younger Self: Always strive for your dream – never compromise your goals for someone/something else. Not everything will work exactly as you planned, but you will open other doors that will give you everything you’ve ever wanted. Be patient with yourself.
