Building Information Modelling

Building Information Modelling is a method to describe the building and its spaces, structures, components and materials with their essential information and properties. The model is a container for the information. BIM can also be described as a collaborative approach making sure the right project information gets to the right people at the right time.

BIM is a process not just a 3D model. Graphical and non-graphical representation/combination of information/data stored on a CDE. Building doesn’t mean a physical building, but it refers to the process of building something (verb not a noun – to build). So, it means to build a model full of information. BIM is essentially value creating collaboration through the entire lifecycle of an asset, underpinned by the creation, collation and exchange of shared 3D models and intelligent, structured data attached to them. BIM is not just a 3D model. It is defined as “file-based collaboration and library management”.

What is Level 2: Collaborative BIM?

In this stage, different disciplines are actively cooperating with others through a model-based collaboration process. The collaboration often occurs through a cloud-based application. Contractual amendments become necessary, and models can be linked to various analysis tools. Processes are assessed through the models. Each discipline is building up their own model, instead of single shared model. The collaboration appears through information exchange between disciplines, which becomes the crucial aspect of this level. Design information is shared through a common file format (such as IFC and BCF), within a Common Data Environment (CDE). This enables organisations to combine data with their own model and use the information onwards.

Wills Bros has the capabilities of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a progressive forward-looking organisation. In 2020, we became one of the very few organisations in the market to obtain BSI Kitemark in ISO 19650-1, ISO19650-2 and BS 1192-4:2018, which is a testament to our commitment and capabilities in building information modelling. Wills Bros believes in BIM implementation across the projects
