Lisheen Mine Tailings Dam Stage 2

This contract involved the raising of the existing Tailings Management Facility (TMF) for the lead and zinc mine by increasing the height of the dam around its perimeter on its downstream. The raise was constructed of glacial till and had a composite lining system on the upstream consisting of a LLDE geo-membrane over a geo-synthetic clay liner. The entire dam raise wall footprint was located in peat areas resulting in 320,000m3 of peat being excavated. Over 1.1 million m3 of glacial till was placed in the dam raise.

Works also included the removal of 2km of railway track along the existing TMF prior to the raise and the relaying of this track on completion of the works.
