Sliabh Bawn Wind Farm Enabling Works for the 110 KV Substation Compound

The Sliabh Bawn Wind Farm is located approximately five kilometres south east of Strokestown, Co. Roscommon in the Doughill Forest on Sliabh Bawn Mountain.  Upon completion, the windfarm will comprise 20 wind turbines and a substation with the projected export capacity of 58 MW.  The substation is located on the eastern slopes of the Sliabh Bawn Mountain and occupies a footprint of approximately 10,000 m2.  The scope of the project was to execute the initial bulk earthworks (including rock breaking) and the construction of reinforcing elements for the following ancillary works.  The works involved the stripping of a deforested area and removal of material to a deposition area, bulk excavation works, the provision of 3 nr. concrete reinforced retaining walls, an in-situ stair case with parapet walls and the import, placement and compaction of capping to the cut and fill embankments.
